Here in LA it almost never feels like winter, but a bit of cooler weather (a low of 45 degrees! gasp!) has inspired me to make some blocks in what I think of as winter-ish colors. Orange probably isn’t but oh well. I can’t help it. I’m continually obsessed with orange.
I have been leisurely making the blocks my favorite way. One at a time, with no concern for straight lines or what size they end up…I’ll frame them all in white in the end. I just eyeball it the whole time and I do so enjoy it. It’s so much fun to just look at all of the fabrics and mix and match and enjoy the process.
But am I making blocks for one quilt?
Or two quilts?
I’m thinking one, but I’m going to have to make some more blocks before I’m completely sure. And maybe some changes…

I am in love with orange too! I think this would make ONE fabulous quilt! I love all your quilts.
I love the orange. I always love orange quilts – and your quilts are wonderful. The cool weather does make for nice quilting weather – it’s even been overcast at our house.
super cute, i have some of those fabrics and i just haven’t been able to figure out what to do with them, but your blocks are beautiful with them! What do you do with all your quilts? I give some away, sell some, keep some, but I need more reasons to make quilts because i can’t seem to stop! love the orange by the way too, everything needs orange.
beautiful blocks! Love the colors!!!
The blocks are so pretty! I particularly like the block with the red flower.
I love the idea of free-style! I can feel really bogged down by measuring and precise cutting. I do really like your fussy cut flowers – they really pop out at me!
i’ve been on an orange kick for several months now. I guess cause it seems fresh , is why i’m drawn to orange fabric.
It is so true that it never seems like winter here (I live in Orange County) but I still find it to be cold. I love all the blocks that you have done and love the idea of them all being in one quilt and all different. Can’t wait to see.
Oh, I am loving these. Really, really nice blocks there. I am continually drawn to orange, particularly burnt orangey colors and yellowish orange too. Another reaon to love Denye Schmidt who makes fabrics with oranges and her quilts too.
Tina
Send that right over to me when you are done. We are having winter for real here in New England…
I love the pop of blue. I also love that the ‘squares’ aren’t square. love the colors. Looks great.
Nice orange blocks. I have almost no orange in my house, but I love quilting with orange fabric so much that I should really remedy that situation.
Designing as you go is the best! So (sew?) liberating. They all look wonderful so far. Can’t wait to see the final project.
I’m really liking orange and yellow fabric lately too. Love your squares…
just keep on a makin’ em. they’re lovely…if you have extras you know what you can do with them!
Pretty, pretty! I’d just make one beautiful quilt.
i love your blocks!!! i also love free piecing that way. and about your weather….i would kill for a high of 45 degrees!!! it’s COLD here. too darn cold…
i love the colors you chose! it looks so scrappy and i love that! great job!
I love all of these blocks! They look wonderful together…very warm and homey
I love them as one quilt in the first pic. They are reminiscent of the Denyse Schmidt patchwork promenade piece to me and I really love that random vintagey feel. Can’t wait to see it all finished!
It’s beautiful and I just love the orange!
I’m loving the colors in these blocks. Now i’m considering becoming obsessed with orange!
