Hexagons!
I said I was gonna dive back into the red & aqua quilt but I couldn’t bring myself to sew another wonky log cabin block. I know! I was shocked too! I’ve actually hit my limit. I’m sure not for long – I’m certain to be back to my beloved soon enough but meanwhile I’ve been seeing these half hex quilts all over the place and I’ve been wanting to futz with one.
I struggle with finding most traditional quilt patterns too “old fashion-y”, but that’s part of the challenge right? How do you take something tradition and modern it up? That sentiment, plus my love of white space led me to this!
I technically did it “wrong.” The rows of hexs are not matched up, but I like the look. It was fun to mess with all those little cut out peices until I found the layout I liked best.
You can find the info to get the template here.
I’m really excited to get quilting on this one. I think I’m gonna try something new! Can you tell I’m trying to break out of my stippled log cabin quilt rut??
Have a great weekend everyone!

Where did you find the cutting template?
Oh yeah. I hit enter before I could say I LOVE this quilt and I’m now dying to make one of my own. The choice of fabric is fabulous.
Whoops! Just edited post to add it… it’s here.
i really like how you set your hexes! it’s original & modern with that hint of tradition. i’ve seen other hexagon quilts but yours is definitely a favorite. i’m making one too, but in the traditional paper-piecing method–it’s going to take forever but quite relaxing to do handwork
This is super cute! Fabulous!!
These look great, especially offset as you have made them. I like the white space too, perfectly balances the prints. Great job!
Love it! I think it looks great with all the white! i have a bunch of white half hexes cut out – i just haven’t decided what to do with them yet… maybe something like this!
I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE it!! The white just makes them all pop!! I now really want to try this!
If this is ‘wrong’, that I don’t want you to be right! Absolutely love it.
beautiful! I love hexies and yours look great with the white.
As usual, i’m so in love! Love how the crisp colors look with the white. And I love the “ghost” of a hex in white at the ends. Really completes the look.
Hey, i’m having a designer fabric giveaway/contest on my blog! Come check it out!
Oh wow…this is stunning! I have to make one!!
looking good. i’m also liking the change.
I LOVE this quilt! Great colors that just pop surrounded by all that white. SOOO great!
I just love, love the white… is so enhances the fabrics. I’ve been watching this flickr pool and contemplating one but was nervous about all my favorite fabrics just blending together… this really is a way to highlight some favorites! Great idea!
This one is absolutely fantastic. I love the floating Hexies! Wow.
Ohhh, this is SO beautiful! I don’t usually love hexagon quilts — they feel a little busy for my taste. But this is absolutely lovely. I’m now dreaming of one of my own in shades of aqua and red.
I love all the white! Probably my favorite hexagon quilt this year! You did a fabulous job!
Looks amazing! Can’t wait to see what you choose for the quilting!
I think they look perfectly fabulous! I really like lots of white with quilts. I was wondering why half hexies were the way to go, and now I can see how they are done with your fab photos. Thanks.
I’m liking this hexagon pattern and love the fabrics your’ve chosen.
Hi — followed you here from the half hexagon flickr group. Nice blog, and I really like your hexagon layout!
Looks wonderful with the white bits.
Great break out. I like your modernization of a traditional block. Have fun quilting it.
WOW! Those hexes look great, looking forward to seeing the quilting
I love this! Definitely one of the best hexie quilts I’ve seen – it’s really simple and pretty, isn’t it!
I love what you did with the half hexy – I may follow!
I love this! I do like the other half hexes floating around, but they can look very busy if you don’t pick the right fabrics. I love lots of white too, so this is definitely a favourite.
(It took me ages to work out how you did it ‘wrong’. It was worth making the ‘mistake’!)
I love the quilt and am looking forward to seeing it quilted.
love this!.. my half hex quilt is still in the cutting phase…
I love the layout~they all look like their floating!
your hex quilt is awesome! i love love LOVE the white!!!
oh I love it – this is my favourite hexagon quilt ever. I too like how the hexagons are offset creating the floating look. They look so fresh and peaceful. Beautiful
It’s veRRy nice!!!!
good for you! it’s great to break out of your comfort zone….see what happens…something FABULOUS!!
I’m all for breaking out of ruts and trying something new. Looks gorgeous. Excited to see what you do for the quilting.
i love your quilt, has a nice modern look to it. how did you make the white piecing.
Thanks Bonnie! I used the template that I linked to in the post (the flickr group the link takes you to says who to email to get the template). Then I just off set the rows so that the hexagons in color were surrounded by white, rather than lining them up so that the white matched up to make more hexagons. Hope that makes sense!
I love the way you put it together – each one is brilliantly framed!
I love your hex quilts. I’ve started my own, based on the tut link. Thanks for the inspiration.
love this quilt, nice change from the super-scrappy handpieced hexagons. i’m starting a big hex quilt, your floating hexes are a great inspiration!
